Below are two series: Middleworlds which describe the subconscious in the form of shapes and colors related to dream imagery, vision quest and animal guides usually eagles. In Golden State (2011) Joynes uses colors and primordial shapes that dial-in to urban imagery from Tokyo where he has lived and frequently visits since 1997. The circular shapes in portals each present a season: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. This series was inspired by a dream after having viewed Alain Resnais’ L'Année dernière à Marienbad (1961) where he works to recreate his own “geometric garden” from imagery from his dream as recollected from the film – inventing for himself a repetitive structure of images remembered, real or imagined.
